Mr. Herman Benjamin Marcus coll.

Ben_alleen_2Herman Benjamin Marcus (1919-2008) was born in Indonesia where his father was a Colonel in the Dutch army. At age 14 he returned to the Netherlands and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1980 he settled in Moraira until his death. In love of malacology formed a large collection of marine, freshwater and terrestrial molluscs, Iberian and Mediterranean. His collection was donated by his sons Ms. Winnifred Oversteengen Van Zee and Mr. Martin Van Zee to the MVHN in 2009 through the mediation of Professor Edmund Gittenberger, curator of molluscs of the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum of Leiden (The Netherlands), which by its relationship with Dr. Martínez-Ortí proposed his assignment to the MVHN. The collection contains approximately 50,000 specimens and 500 species, that some of them correspond to type material .
